Making corn syrup from corn starch



Corn syrup (also called glucose syrup ) is a food syrup which is made from the corn starch  and contains varying amounts of maltose and higher oligosaccharides, depending on the grade. Unlike other sweeteners, corn syrup doesn't crystallize and turn grainy when it's cold. Baked goods,  sauces and candies made with corn syrup are moister and stay fresh longer than those made with sugar. 

How to make corn syrup from corn starch  ?  In simple words is that the corn syrup  is made by breaking down corn starch with enzymes -- a bit like the natural process that occurs when corn sprouts -- and then refining it into a liquid sweetener.



The corn syrup  produced from corn starch need several steps of  corn syrup industrial production :

1) Mixing process:  Mix corn starch with water make corn starch slurry .

2) Spray liquefied process : The spray jet will make the corn starch slurry into syrup at high temperature. 

3). Saccharifying process : The liquified syrup with very low DE value , add some glucoamylase , the some liquified syrup will transfer to glucose . After the DE       value of syrup reach the requirement , increase the temperature to kill emzyme. 

4). Decoloration process : Use the activated carbon to remove the color of the glucose syrup . Mix activated carbon with glucose syrup at uniform temperature for some time , then press out the carbon from glucose syrup . For getting more clear glucose syrup , it usually need make two times . 

5) .  Ion exchange process : Ion exchange machine will attract all the  cation and anion  in the clean glucose syrup , it will improve the glucose quality . Small corn syrup plant will do not  need this machine . 

6) .  Evaporate process :  The evaporator will take out the water inside of the corn syrup  to increase the corn syrup density to reach the buyer requirement . 

7).  Finished product storage : The corn syrup will storage at the corn syrup processing plant  before transport

High fructose corn syrup introduction:

   High fructose corn syrup is called HFCS for short. The saccharified liquid from enzymic method saccharified starch isomerizes part of glucose into fructose through the isomerization effect by glucose isomerase. It is a kind of mixing syrup which consists of glucose and fructose. 

    High fructose corn syrup can replace cane sugar. Just like cane sugar, it can be widely applied in food and beverage industry. Especially in beverage industry, it has better flavor and taste and lower price than cane sugar. Its usage has outstanding advantages in food and beverage industry.

Detailed description process of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant

1. Mixing and liquidation of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant:
    Corn powder or rice powder is mixed with water . PH is adjusted 5.0-6.0. After size mixing, it is added high temperature liquefying enzyme, and then reaches spraying liquidator through slurry pump. The temperature after spraying is controlled at 100--110°C, and the time for heat preservation is 60min, then the second spraying temperature is 120-125℃. Flash evaporation reduces temperature to about 96°C,and the time for heat preservation is 2 hours. After destroying the enzyme activity, it removes the fat.

2. Saccharifying of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant:
    It utilizes saccharifying enzyme, and saccharifies when the mash temperature reaches 58-60℃. It goes to the next section upon reaching the required DE value.

3.Liquid glucose decoloration of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant:
    After once and twice active carbon decoloration process, it can remove fat, protein and coloring matter in the liquid glucose.

4.Super membrane filtration of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant :
    After decoloration, when the clear liquid passes inspection, it can enter into the membrane filtration system to remove the soluble protein in the liquid glucose and reduce the protein content.

5.Ion exchange system of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant:
    It adjusts the liquid glucose temperature and PH value and cools temperature before exchange. The liquid glucose pumps into ion exchange system for desalination and remove the ash on the liquid glucose.

6.Concentration of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant :
    After desalination, under vacuum conditions, the liquid glucose is heated for evaporation. When the liquid glucose concentration reaches the range that the technology requires, then it cools the temperature and enters into the next section. 

7. Isomerization section of  high fructose corn syrup processing plant :
   After adjusting acidity, concentration and the microelements of the syrup, it enters into the heterogeneous column. Under the immobilization isomerase effect, it isomerizes glucose into fructose and produces 42% original syrup.

    We process the original syrup by secondary decoloration, refining exchange, secondary concentration, compound preparation, and temperature adjustment, then pump it into the end products tank for storage. The end product is F42 high fructose corn syrup.

Maltose syrup  introduction
       Maltose syrup is used as a sweetener in manufacturing baked goods, soft drinks and various other products. The advantage of using maltose syrup is it helps in inhibiting bacterial growth and fermentation and improves shelf life as well. 

Maltose syrup production equipment process description:
1.Mixing unit of maltose syrup production equipment
         Put the corn powder/rice powder and water  into the mixing tank, then put in enzyme, keep on particular standard temperature, waiting for some time , then transport to next work section. 
2.Injector liquefaction unit of maltose syrup production equipment
        The mixed corn powder / rice pwoder milk is sent to buffer tank then liquefied by jet cooker with the aid of enzyme at high temperature  in regular time . 
3. Filter press deproteinization  unit of maltose syrup production equipment
        Because of inside of the corn / rice slurry have too much protein, so the slurry need pumping into the press filter, after press the slurry,  the syrup will flow into the slot, the protein will stay inside the filter machine.
4.Saccharification  unit of maltose syrup production equipment
        The liquefied material is sent to enzyme saccharification tank for reaction.   Maintain at specific temperature for some time , the syrup will transfer to maltose syrup . 
5.Decolorization unit of maltose syrup production equipment
         After LAB testing, all the maltose syrup pumping into the decoloration tanks, at uniform temperature,  mix with activated carbon, usually it have to make twice to get pure maltose syrup.
6.Filter press decarburization unit of maltose syrup production equipment 
         The maltose syrup with activated carbon will be pumped into the press filter, after press the clean maltose syrup will flow into the buffer tank, the activated carbon will stay inside the filter.
7.Ion exchange unit of maltose syrup production equipment
         The clean maltose syrup pumping into the ion exchange columns, inside the column resin will attract all the cation and anion and other small electron, then will get very pure glucose syrup for people eating.  This equipment always is used for high quality product.
8.Concentration unit of maltose syrup production equipment
    Under vacuum conditions, the maltose syrup is heated for evaporation. When the maltose syrup concentration reaches the  technology requirement, then it cools the temperature and enters into the final product tank for storage. The finished product can be high maltose syrup and super high maltose syrup .
